The Legacy of Tekken 3

Released in arcades in 1997 and on the PlayStation 1 in 1998, Tekken 3 didn't just move the franchise forward—it redefined the entire fighting game genre. While Tekken 1 and 2 were impressive, they were essentially 2D fighters with 3D models. Tekken 3 was different. It introduced true three-dimensional movement by adding the ability to sidestep into the foreground or background, forever changing how players approached positioning and combos.

Built on the Namco System 12 arcade board, the game pushed the original PlayStation to its absolute breaking point. It featured significantly more detailed character models, fluid 60fps animations, and complex backgrounds. Even today, the game is cited as one of the most optimized pieces of software ever released for the console.

Tekken 3 marked a major turning point in the series' lore. It took place 19 years after the previous game, introducing a new generation of fighters. This was the world's introduction to Jin Kazama, the son of Kazuya and Jun, who would go on to become the face of the series. Alongside him, legendary characters like Hwoarang, Ling Xiaoyu, Bryan Fury, and the high-flying Eddy Gordo made their first appearances, creating a roster that many fans still consider the best in history.

Relive that 1998 magic right here. Whether you're here to pull off Paul's death fist or just mash buttons with Eddy, the King of Iron Fist Tournament is waiting.
